Katherine O’Reilly and Rekkid Cor. Human and Arkari. Archaeologists with a story about an ancient derelict starship that few believe and a captain’s log that tells of an ancient genocidal war that no-one has ever heard of. But if no-one believes their story, then why are the authorities so keen to suppress it?

Captain Michelle Chen of the Commonwealth Navy. Brave, cunning, merciless. Dangerous even. However she may be just the person her superiors have been looking for to start a war.

Steven Harris. Secret agent with a conscience, who defied orders, ignored the chain of command and let his morals get in the way of his career.

Quickchild. An AI of unknown origin and staggering power that does not know who it truly is.

As the colonies of the human Commonwealth stand on the brink of war with the fanatic legions of the alien K’Soth Empire, these five individuals are drawn to the backward, arid planet of Maranos that stands between the two civilisations. As relations between human and alien deteriorate, Maranos is about to give up its ancient, terrifying secrets.

This book was excellent! Granted, you won't enjoy it unless you're a scifi fan, but if you like scifi, you'll find this book *quite* entertaining. This book was self-published - which, having done that myself, that's not something I have a problem with at all - but it was definitely in need of an editor to fix the typos that popped up throughout the story. However, while in some cases typos can be distracting and detract from the tale, they really didn't in this case, as the story was just so entertaining and engaging. I'd say the author is *obviously* a fan of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. There were quite a few aspects that seemed directly inspired by the ST and BSG universes. However, the author managed to keep to the side of 'inspiration' without crossing the line into 'ripping off.' I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am excited that it's the first part of a trilogy - off to download book 2!

Exiles The Progenitor Trilogy Book One eBook Dan Worth Reviews

There are no small concepts in Exiles. Elder races, older than stars, have engineered an entire solar systems for their own mysterious purposes. Humanity and the brutal K'Soth meet in battle, while the ancient Arkari watch, make their plans, and keep their secrets (even from themselves!). Monsters are truly monstrous with horrifying plans for the galaxy - and they truly do come from Hell.
Definitely a worthwhile read for fans of Epic Space Opera!
I would definitely give the content and concept behind the story high marks, but the writing style takes a lot to get used to. The book was quite cumbersome due to the author's word choices. The use of past tense spellings such as "learnt", "smelt"(meaning smelled, not made from metal) or constantly using the word, "whilst" just to mention a few idiosyncrasies of the author's technique, was irritating and tended to slow down my reading. Perhaps others will not have an issue with this. The spellling errors and missing or misplaced words and phrases are easy to overlook for me, as the are rather common from this type of content on . But they don't detract from the enjoyment you can derive from a good plot and relatively strong character development which I appreciated in this book.

In all I think that it a fair indication that future novels should continue to improve.
I happened to stumble on the listing for The Progenitor Trilogy. I read the reviews and all were glowing. The price for the version was peanuts so I decided to give it a try. I have been reading Si-Fi books for the past 45 years and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the greatness of this Trilogy. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 15 despite of all the typos in the text especially in book one. Let me make it perfectly clear that the typos did not affect my immense enjoyment of the Trilogy. There was so much depth and intense story telling that I barely noticed it. The storyline was amazing and made you not want to put the book down. Each book was large in the number of pages and I enjoyed every word, typos and all. The Progenitor Trilogy is a MUST for anyone who truly enjoys Si-Fi! After having read it I realized that I would have gladly paid 10 times the amount that it actually cost me. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed it. Though the story was epic and hard to imagine how you could top it the writer left a hint of an even greater threat to the entire universe. Hopefully more such stories to come. I can't wait to read more books by this author.
At first, I was tempted to dump this novel because much of the background and plotting was out of Science Fiction's Central Casting. Thankfully I didn't.

First, the bad

Much of the initial background is pulled from the mass market SF central casting booth, e.g.

A.) Races ruled by a single government (Human Confederation), etc.

B.) Races straight from central casting such as the Arkari and K'Soth (who could be replaced with the Klingons or Kilrathi easily).

There are also proofing errors every so often in the book; like the use of improper grammar, or a long sentence missing a period or comma. Thankfully, these errors don't appear that often and thus don't jar you out of your reading.

Some of the military technology is a bit jarring, like starship combat ranges measured in kilometers, and the fact that apparently crews don't wear space suits when going into a combat situation.

Now, the good

The novel straddles a whole bunch of science fictional genres ranging from alien archaelogy to warfare and some REALLY mind blowing concepts (I won't spoil these for you); so it's likely you will find something you will like.

Just about everything described in the novel (combat, alien archaelogy) starts out small, and then quickly keeps escalating throughout the novel. The author clearly does not have a problem with imagining BIG THINGS [tm].

Suffice to say, if I told you more, I'd be spoiling a lot of plot details.
I absolutely loved Mr. Worth's book. His character development was rich and detailed, and hist plot was fresh and original. If like me you miss the old Babylon 5 TV series, and want a story that captures its spirit, but in a creative and fresh way, you will like this book. And don't think the storyline is routine with a predictable ending it's not, and it delivers one surprise right after the other. Incidentally, there are a few spelling errors throughout the book -- not all that much, but a few; who cares? I'll take content over form any day. Mr. Worth has gifted us with a wonderful work. Now, I'm devouring his second book.
